Arunachal is nation’s sentinel of the east: Tuki

Govt to set-up Martyrs’ Memorial in Itanagar

ITANAGAR, Nov 24: Arunachal Pradesh is the nation's “sentinel of the east”, and its people are patriotic and “jealously guarding the territorial integrity of the country”, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said today.

“Sitting on the lap of the Himalayas, we are the first to resist any force against India. If any enemy eyes India through North East, Arunachal Pradesh will stand against it first, like in the 1962 Sino-India war,” he told the valedictory programme of the three-day 'Sarhad ko Swaranjali' organized by North East unit of Sansakar Bharati at Indira Gandhi Park here.

Tuki announced that the Government would set-up a Martyrs’ Memorial in the state capital Itanagar in memory of those soldiers killed while fighting the invading Chinese army in 1962. He said Itanagar, which was established as the state capital after 1962, owes its respect to the Martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the country and territorial integrity of Arunachal Pradesh.

Tuki paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1962 war and acknowledged the exemplary services rendered by the Indian soldiers along the international boundaries that the state shares with neighboring countries. He remembered martyr Jaswant Singh Rawat, hero of the Indo-China war, as a true son of the soil and said Arunachal Pradesh as well as the whole country will always remain grateful for his ultimate sacrifice.

Felicitating wheel-chair bound Leela Devi, 94- year-old mother of martyr Jaswant Singh, who came all the way from Dehradun to attend the programme as the Chief Guest, Tuki expressed gratefulness on behalf of the people of the state.

“Your setting foot on the soil of Arunachal Pradesh has furthered the sanctity of the land of the dawnlit-mountains, where your brave son laid down his life fighting the enemy. I salute the mother, who sacrificed her beloved son for this land,” he said.

Citing his visits to remote army locations and forward-posts, the Chief Minister acknowledged the hardships being faced by officers and soldiers of the Indian Army in the line of duty. He reiterated his assurance that the state government and people of Arunachal Pradesh will always support the soldiers whenever called for.

Heaping praises on Sanskar Bharati, he said patriotism of the people of North East, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, is unfathomable and through this programme this will be now acknowledged by the entire country.

“The need of the hour is to awaken the patriotism in us and reiterate our duties towards our motherland. I appreciate the novel endeavour of the organizers,” he added.

Among those honoured on the occasion were Tagom Taki from Beging village in East Siang district who served as SSB constable and died on March 30, 2002 during an attack on Raghunath Mandir temple in Jammu, Kriti Chakra awardee Lance Naik Tape Yajo from Aalo and jawan Pate Tasuk from Kurung Kumey, both of whom died in action along the J&K border.

At least 100 veterans and families of martyrs of the 1962 Sino-India war hailing from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam participated in the programme.

Also present during the programme were 1962 war-veteran Lt Gen (Retd) V M Patil, actor Mukesh Khanna of Shaktiman-fame, Dabang-2 writer Dilip Shukla, renowned artistes from across the country and others.

The programme was marked by colourful cultural programmes by participants from the North Eastern states and school children and a soulful rendition of the ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon’ by Lata Mangeshkar.  (With inputs from PTI)

I am often asked as to why does a soldier (during war) walk into a situation of certain death? What makes him do this act”?

“Having seen this from close quarters, I consider it to be a determination to achieve the goal and defend the motherland. The man in him urges him to go on and on and the nation must recognize it. The Annual Eucharistic Procession held this year at the conclusion of the Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI at Rome last year this time was an invitation to the Catholic Faithful to mould their lives on Christ the King of Peace.

“The Year of Faith as declared by the Holy Father is an invitation to you to lead God-fearing lives, to mould your lives on Gospel values and to make every family a ‘seminary’ where good citizens and God-fearing children will be nurtured” , said the Bishop.  John Thomas also exhorted the Catholic faithful to remind themselves that in God alone lays the common brotherhood of all people and in God all are brothers and sisters.

The procession which took about two hours to culminate at the premises of Good Shepherd School bracing the blazing sun and dusty roads, prayed for God’s blessings on all and for peace, harmony and prosperity of Arunachal.

The annual Eucharistic Procession of the Catholic Church, coinciding with the feast of Christ the Universal King was spectacular for the sheer number of faithful who turned up and took devout participation. APFA completes a busy, fruitful year

ITANAGAR, Nov 24: There are several footballers in the streets and corners of Arunachal Pradesh; some who have been recognised, while others are waiting to be discovered. People often speak of the abundance of football players the state has. But they also question the position of the state team in terms of national representation and also how players are not provided with better facilities.

This is where the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA) comes into play. The association under the guidance of APFA president Takam Sanjoy, secretary general G Doke and with the active support of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki who himself is a football enthusiast, have been working to improve the football scene in the state. Tuki was in fact instrumental in inking a MoU with UK-based Reading Football Club, which will see two football coaches from the academy coming to the state to scout local talent.

Besides organising local football tournaments, the association has taken the state team to the national level and instilled self confidence among the players, encouraging them to do better in future tournaments; highlighted by the Arunachal team’s participation in the Santosh Trophy held at Kerela in February earlier this year, followed by a visit to Shillong in March for the Dr T Ao Memorial Football Tournament.

This year also saw the boys’ under-16 team represent the state at the B C Roy National Football Championship at Jharkhand, while the boys’ under-14 team participated in the National Football Championships held in Odisha.

Besides preparing teams for zonal and national football tournaments, the APFA organised several local tournaments like the XII Tadar Tang Memorial State Level Football Tournament (TTMSLFT) held at Pasighat earlier this year and the IV Eagle Trophy State Level Football Tournament held at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Naharlagun.

Other local tournaments witnessed this year include the 1st Inter District Level Football Tournament, the 2nd Gogio Taya Memorial State Level Football Tournament, and the 1st Veteran State Level Football Tournament, which allowed former players to showcase their skills to the younger generation of footballers.

Key contributions were also made by former footballer and Councillor Kipa Takum who was the organising chairman of the 2nd Arunachal League Football Tournament, which was held under the aegis of the APFA. The league competition was a landmark one in many ways. League champions Todo United FC were the biggest beneficiary of the competition as they would now be trying to make a mark at the national football landscape, hoping to make it to the second division of the Indian League which begins in April next year.

Additionally, four clubs which registered with the APFA before the league began will now receive grants-in-aids from the government, thanks much due to the efforts of officials from the association such as assistant general secretary Kipa Ajay.

The AGS informed that teams and players have to register themselves with the APFA to be deemed recognised to participate in competitions organised by the association. Hoping to keep a check on unscrupulous tournaments, Ajay says “organisers who do not seek permission from the association to hold tournaments will not be recognised and APFA teams and players will not be allowed to participate in such competitions. Also, the APFA cannot take the risk for unruly incidents that occur in such competitions”.

The APFA believes in fair participation and have been encouraging female players to enter into the field of sports as well. The association has created an all-girls team, who recently participated in the under-14 National Football Championships held at Odisha. To further support the fairer sex in their endeavours, the association will also organise the 2nd Nyari Welly Memorial State Level Women Football Tournament which will take place by the end of the year.

The association has planned ahead for next year and is organising the under-16 Dera Natung Memorial State Level Football Tournament at Nari in East Siang district and the XIII edition of the prestigious Tadar Tang Memorial Tournament to be held at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium Naharlagun. The last date for registration for TTMSLFT is December 20.

While putting in efforts to nurture and showcase the talent present in Arunachal, the APFA has announced that the state will be represented by the Arunachal football team in the Santosh Trophy scheduled to be held in February next year in Mizoram, and the Arunachal Women’s team will participate in the National Football Championships which is set to be held in January next year.

However, there are also concerns as the lone stadium in the state capital, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, is still not at a level to host high profile zonal and national level competitions. During the 11th edition of the Tadar Tang Memorial Tournament in 2012, the chief minister had announced a sum of Rs two crores for the maintenance of the stadium which still hasn’t materialised. It’s an amount that will only help the APFA develop the game further in the state. For the sake of the state, citizens can only pray it happens soon.

NHPC’s Subansiri project cost may go to Rs 12k cr

New Delhi, Nov 24: The total cost of state-owned NHPC's Subansiri Lower Project in Arunachal Pradesh is likely to be around Rs 12,000 crore, nearly double than envisaged initially, following delays on account of various hindrances.

The country's largest hydro power producer, NHPC is executing the 2,000-MW Subansiri lower hydel plant. The original cost of the project was Rs 6,285 crore.

"Local issues, contractual issues, geological surprises, delay in decision making and poor risk-taking assessment have impacted the progress on the Subansiri project, which is now likely to cost nearly Rs 12,000 crore," a senior company official told PTI.

The project has been stalled since December 2011, after the local people raised issues related to its safety and downstream impact.

"Assam also wanted to increase its total share of power from the project," the official said, adding that the state was earlier granted 208 MW of electricity from the hydel station which has now increased to 300 MW. Besides, the state is expected to get 25 MW or more free power from the plant which is likely to resume construction work next month.

The project, earlier expected to be fully commissioned by December 2012, is now likely to be operational by December 2017.

"We are hopeful that the construction work on the project would start again from December next month," the official said.

According to sources, the Power Ministry had a meeting with the state government earlier this month and achieved some breakthrough on the issues.

Once commissioned, Subansiri (250x8) will be India's biggest hydroelectric project.

The estimated annual energy generation from the project is 7,421 million units.

NHPC generates 5,702 MW electricity from 17 hydel stations in the country. As many as seven power stations with total capacity of 4,095 MW are under construction. PTI

Lower Dibang Valley Road woes of East Kameng district

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw the attention of concern authority towards the worsening condition of the Nechipu (Zero Point) to Seppa road passing through Khuphy, Ramda, Palizi, Bana, Pompoli, Wessang and then Seppa. The 99 KM long Nechipu-Seppa road is turning into worse state due to landslides and lack of maintenance. Though the road is in terrible condition so far no proper action of any kind has been taken up to address the problems. Nechipu-Seppa road is the only road which connects East Kameng district and its Sub-Divisions, Circles and villages of the district with other districts of the state like West Kameng and Assam too. Daily around 500 to 600 vehicles including Govt., private, business/ commercial duties and tourist purposes ply but they are facing severe trouble while driving over the road, which affects the health of the people. The daily essential commodities are being supplied through this road and due to pathetic condition of the road, vehicles get mechanical defects and ultimately people of the East Kameng have to face the problems.

This is a serious economic and communication hindrance to the people of East Kameng. As it is the lone life-line of East Kameng district, why our five MLAs of district don’t care about the poor road condition whenever they drive through this road? Besides that there are numbers of East Kameng based, NGOs, other social organizations and so on, but I don’t find their voice for the cause of own district interest. This is the time for all the organizations, students’ unions to raise the matter to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the problems, but I guess they don’t care about the district’s problems. Citizens are busy with their livelihood; as such they don’t have time to spare for the social cause.

Furthermore, large numbers of leader’s of students unions like AAPSU and ANSU belongs to East Kameng District but it seems they too have turned deaf, dumb and blind or might have forgot the burning problems of their own district.

Seeing all these basic problems of the district I would like to draw the attention of concerned authority to kindly pay heed towards the above stated plight for the greater interest of the East Kameng’s overall development as there is no alternate road to Seppa other than this.

On the other hand, there is a road which connects Seppa with Capital Complex, Itanagar, by passing through Pijirang, Pakke-Kessang Circles of East Kameng and then Sagalee, Toru Circles of Papum Pare to reach Itanagar but the said road is almost in defunct state due to non-maintenance since BRTF left it in 2000-2001. And the State PWD department has failed to keep up the road condition, despite huge sanctions of funds for the maintenance works.

Thus, the citizens of East Kameng are requested to wake up from their sleep and speak up for better development, since our district has already attained 33 years of creation, despites of that, we still don’t have proper communications and it is a great insult for the people of East Kameng district.

The State Govt and five MLAs of East Kameng district are requested to keep up the Seppa-Sagalee and Itanagar road vehicular-able mode for all weather road conditions please. Please! please! please!

Your’s,

Dokum Taku(Sangno)

Vice President

To begin with we were very much delighted with the positive attitude and humble behavior of respected PCCF and would like to express our deep happiness and satisfaction over the verbal assurance given by him to give reservation quotas for forestry graduates in the posts of ACFs/ RFOs in state Environment and Forest Department in the days to come. He further assured to keep atleast reservation Quotas for the B.Sc and M.Sc and PhD forestry holders for forthcoming RFOs/ACFs recruitment. After years of battle for the aforementioned reservation quotas, his words are like a ray of hope for the increasing number of unemployed forestry graduates in the state who due to lack of scope in the respective course are compelled to go for jobs in other departments which is totally irrelevant to the kind of study they pursue in their four year degree course. Moreover, the sooner implementation of his words would certainly encourage more and more students from the upcoming generations to take up the course with more interest and satisfaction.

Yours,

Remove inequalities from society

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily I would like to say that economic development needs to be social justice. Social justice means that economic and political power should be equitably distributed in the state and there should be no concentration of economic power in the hands of a few people and political leaders of the state. With social justice people will have more incentive for economic growth in the state and country as a whole. Our state is still facing economic crisis and it’s all because of political hands. The central government has been pumping in crores of fund or scheme every year to improve state’s economic development but state government misuses the fund and scheme. The absence of social justice presents a serious problem in the path of economic growth.

Development must therefore be conceived of as a multidimensional process involving major changes in social structures, population attitudes, and state institutions, as well as the acceleration of economic growth, the reduction of inequality and the eradication of poverty.

So I would like to say that government should help to obtain social justice through reduction in inequalities of income by progressive taxation of incomes, decentralization of economic power, more expenditure on the weaker sections of the society, workers participation in management, etc. This will bring institutional changes in the economy and promote economic growth of the state.

Yours

Let there be proper investigation

The allegation of attempt to rape laced on Tehelka editor in chief Tarun Tejpal by his female colleague has shocked the entire press fraternities of country. Tehelka is one of most respected news magazine of country known for bringing out often controversial but explosive news item. The sting operation carried out by its reporter posing as arms dealers’ years ago had exposed the political-middlemen nexus in many high profile arm deals.  Tarun Tejpal is founder of Tehelka magazine and has been one of reason why it garnered so much popularity in the last decade.

It is in this context that allegation leveled against him by his fellow colleague is very serious in nature. One do not expect person like him who is role model for many budding journalists to indulge in such shameful act. The incident happens at a time when whole country is still yet to overcome the trauma of Nirbhaya gang rape incident. Though Tejpal has apologized to the victim journalist and also ‘recusing’ himself from the post of editor in chief of Tehelka for six month, one wonder is that really enough? He ought to be treated like any another criminal and Goa police, where incident took place, should immediately start criminal proceeding against him. Press Council of India should also step in and ensure that he does not return to editorial board till proper investigation is done.
